BYLAW NO. 680
A BYLAW OF THE VILLAGE OF BARONS
IN THE PROVINCE OF ALBERTA
TO PROHIBIT THE KEEPING OF WILD OR DOMESTIC ANIMALS OR POULTRY IN
THE VILLAGE OF BARONS
PURSUANT to the provisions of the Municipal Government Act, Revised Statutes of Alberta 2000,
Chapter M-26 and amendments thereto;
WHEREAS the intent of the Bylaw is to prohibit the keeping of wild or domestic animals and poultry
within the Village of Barons;
The Council of the Village of Barons, in the Province of Alberta, duly assembled, HEREBY ENACTS
AS FOLLOWS:
This Bylaw may be cited as the "Keeping of Wild or Domestic Animals or Poultry Bylaw".
1.
DEFINITIONS:
a) ANIMAL means any farm animal, bird, rodent, fur-bearing animal or wild animal;
b) BEE means any insect of the species Apis mellifera;
c) COUNCIL means the Municipal Council of the Village of Barons;
d) DEER means a mammal of any species of the family Cervidae;
e) DOMESTIC ANIMAL means any farm animal such as donkey's, llamas, horses,
pigs, cows, sheep, cows, goats, rabbits and pigeons
f) FERAL means an animal that is not confined to a parcel of property;
g) FUR BEARING ANIMALS means minks, weasels, beavers, muskrats, foxes,
squirrels, badgers or martens.
h) POULTRY means any bird normally raised for food or egg production, and
includes: chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, emu's, ostrich, artificially reared grouse,
partridge, quail, pheasant or ptarmigan;
i) RABBIT means any of various long eared, short tailed, burrowing mammals of the
family Leporidae;
j) WILD ANIMALS means any animal which is wild by nature and has the instinctive
propensity to bite or attack human beings. This includes any wild rodent or bird.
2.
No person shall keep wild or domestic animals or poultry within the limits of the Village
of Barons.
3.
FUR-BEARING ANIMALS
No person shall keep, feed or harbour any fur-bearing animal on any parcel of land within
the Municipality.
4.
WILD ANIMALS
No person shall keep, feed or harbour any wild animal on any parcel of land within the
Municipality.
5.
DEER
No person shall feed deer or any other wild animals which include but not limited to
skunks, coyotes, or any other feral animals within the Municipality.
6.
RABBITS
No owner or occupier of property shall keep a rabbit on the property with the
Village of Barons. No person(s) shall feed any feral rabbit within the Village of
Barons municipal boundaries.
No person shall release or abandon a rabbit on any land within the Municipality.
7.
POULTRY
No person shall keep any poultry on any parcel of land within the Village of Barons.

BEES
No person shall keep or harbour any bees on any parcel of land within the Village of
Barons.
9.
FEEDING
No person shall feed any stray animal which includes birds, stray cats or dogs on any
portion of the Village Boulevard.
10.
PENALTIES
Any person contravening any provision of this Bylaw is guilty of an offence and is liable
on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding $500.00 or in default of payment of the
fine and costs, to imprisonment for a period not exceeding thirty (30) days or until such
fine and costs are paid.
This Bylaw hereby rescinds Bylaw No. 626 and shall come into force and take effect on the day
of the final passing thereof.
