BYLAW 144-25
SUMMER VILLAGE OF SUNSET BEACH
A BYLAW TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH FEDERAL AND PROVINCIAL WASTEWATER/SEWAGE
REGULATIONS
WHEREAS the Summer Village of Sunset Beach recognizes the importance of maintaining
environmental standards and public health through proper wastewater management;
AND WHEREAS the Summer Village of Sunset Beach wishes to ensure compliance with all
applicable federal and provincial laws and regulations concerning wastewater and sewage
disposal;
NOW THEREFORE the Council of the Summer Village of Sunset Beach, in the province of
Alberta, enacts as follows:
1. Title
This bylaw may be cited as the "Wastewater and Sewage Compliance Bylaw".
2. Definitions
For the purposes of this bylaw, the following definitions shall apply:

"Wastewater" means water that has been used for domestic, industrial, or commercial
purposes, and includes sewage.

"Sewage" refers to the wastewater and its contents, including human waste, industrial
waste, and other effluent.

"Federal and Provincial Regulations" refer to all applicable statutes, regulations, and
standards set by the Government of Canada and the Province of Alberta that govern
wastewater and sewage management, including but not limited to the Canadian
Environmental Protection Act, the Alberta Water Act, the Alberta Wastewater and
Sewage Disposal Regulations, and any amendments thereto.
3. Compliance with Wastewater/Sewage Regulations
All properties within the Summer Village of Sunset Beach shall adhere to the wastewater and
sewage management requirements as set forth by all applicable federal and provincial
regulations, including but not limited to:

Adherence to federal regulations, including standards outlined by the Canadian
Environmental Protection Act and the Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations, where
applicable.

Compliance with provincial regulations set by Alberta Environment and Parks, the
Alberta Water Act, and the Alberta Wastewater and Sewage Disposal Regulations for the
design, installation, operation, and maintenance of wastewater and sewage systems.
4. Wastewater/Sewage System Approval and Inspection
1. Permitting Requirements: No person shall install, alter, or operate a wastewater or
sewage system within the Summer Village of Sunset Beach without obtaining the
necessary permits and approvals from the Inspections Group, and if required, from the
Summer Village of Sunset Beach.
2. Inspections: The Summer Village of Sunset Beach may, at its discretion, conduct
inspections of wastewater and sewage systems on private properties to ensure
compliance with this bylaw and applicable federal and provincial regulations.
5. Non-Compliance
1. Any person found to be in violation of this bylaw, or failing to comply with applicable
federal or provincial wastewater and sewage regulations, may be subject to fines,
penalties, or other legal actions as permitted by law.
2. If any wastewater or sewage system is determined to be a health or environmental
hazard, the Summer Village of Sunset Beach may take corrective actions, including
issuing a notice to remedy, ordering the cessation of operations, or requiring system
repairs or upgrades to meet compliance.
6. Enforcement
1. The Summer Village of Sunset Beach may designate an officer or employee for the
purposes of enforcement of this bylaw.
2. Any contravention of this bylaw may result in enforcement proceedings, including but
not limited to warnings, fines, or penalties as per the Municipal Government Act and
other relevant legislation.
7. Severability
If any section, clause, or provision of this bylaw is declared invalid by a court of competent
jurisdiction, such declaration shall not affect the validity of the remaining sections, clauses, or
provisions of this bylaw.
8. Repeal and Amendment
This bylaw repeals any pervious Wastewater and/or Sewage Bylaws.

This bylaw may be amended, modified, or repealed by the Council of the Summer Village of
Sunset Beach at any time as necessary, in accordance with the applicable legislative processes.
9. Coming Into Force
This Bylaw comes into force on third reading.
