## Town of Swan Hills By-Law No. 2012-02 ## BEING A BY-LAW OF THE TOWN OF SWAN HILLS, IN THE PROVINCE OF ALBERTA, TO PROVIDE FOR THE OF NUMBERING OF BUILDING OR PARCELS OF LAND WHEREAS, the Municipal Government Act, R.S.A. 2000, Chapter M-26:1, a municipality may assign a number or other means of identification to buildings or parcels of land. AND WHEREAS, the Municipal Government Act, R.S.A. 2000, Chapter M-26.1, a municipality may require an owner or occupant of a building or parcel of land to display the identification in a certain manner. AND WHEREAS, in accordance with the Act, Council deems it beneficial to provide for an orderly addressing system to identify building and parcels of land and to provide for the efficient delivery of emergency services in the Town of Swan Hills. NOW THEREFORE, the Council of the Town of Swan Hills duly assembled enact as follows: ## PART I - APPLICATION - Every legally registered parcel that abuts an identifiable road shall be assigned an address number by the Town as soon as possible. 2. When assigning an address number, consideration shall be paid to the dimensions of, and distances between, individual lots in order to provide space for the addressing of additional parcels that may be created through subdivision or annexation. - Numbering on avenues shall commence at each street intersection and with even numbers on the north side of each avenue and odd numbers on the south side of each avenue, and continue numbering upwards in a westerly direction until the intersection of the next street. - Numbering on streets shall commence at each avenue intersection and with even numbers on the west side of each street and odd numbers on the east side of each street, continue numbering upwards in a northerly direction until the intersection of the next avenue. - It shall be the responsibility of every property owner, at their own expense, to display at all times at the front property line, address numbers that are plainly visible from the adjacent roadway. ## Town of Swan Hills By-Law No. 2012-02 ## BEING A BY-LAW OF THE TOWN OF SWAN HILLS, IN THE PROVINCE OF ALBERTA, TO PROVIDE FOR THE OF NUMBERING OF BUILDING OR PARCELS OF LAND - Every address sign shall be made from durable and waterproof material, and shall not have a surface area exceeding 0.3 square meters (3.2 square feet). - Numbers and characters featured on address signs shall not be less that 3 inches (7.6 centimeters) in height and shall contrast with the background colour. ## PART II - PROHIBITIONS - No person shall display, or permit to be displayed, an address number other than the address number assigned by the Town of Swan Hills. - No person shall fail to maintain an address sign that is legible. - No person shall maintain an address that has been destroyed, defaced, or obstructed. ## PART III - PENALTIES - Any person who contravenes any of the provisions of this by-law is guilty of an offense and liable to a fine not exceeding $500.00. ## PART IV - ENACTMENT - This by-law shall take effect , 2012 Read a FIRST time this day of , 2012 Read a SECOND time this day of , 2012 Read a THIRD time this day of , 2012 And finally passed in Open Council Mayor Chief Administrative Officer
