Bylaw: 14-2024
Municipal Elections Bylaw
A BYLAW OF THORHILD COUNTY, IN THE PROVINCE OF ALBERTA, TO
REGULATE THE CONDUCT OF MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
WHEREAS, the Local Authorities Election Act RSA 2000, c, L-21 and amendments
provides for the conduct of elections by local authorities; and the Local Authorities
Election Act permits the local authority to establish bylaws for the conduct of election
procedures.
Thorhild County shall adhere to the provisions of the Local Authorities Election Act RSA
2000, c, L-21.
Thorhild County Council of the Province of Alberta, duly assembled enacts the following:
PART 1: Bylaw Title
1.1 This Bylaw shall be known as the "Elections Bylaw".
PART 2. Definitions
2.1 Words in this bylaw have the same meaning as set out in the Local Authorities
Election Act. RSA 2000 L-21.
PART 3. Joint Elections
3.1 The Chief Administrative Officer is authorized to negotiate and enter into
agreements, on behalf of Thorhild County, to conduct elections with one or more
elected authorities of local jurisdictions that do not have contiguous boundaries but
to have areas in common.
PART 4. Criminal Record Check
4.1 Candidates will be required to provide a criminal record check conducted, within
the calendar year of the election, by RCMP, at the sole expense of the candidate.
Criminal record check to be submitted with the Candidate's nomination.

PART 5. Nomination Deposit
5.1 Every nomination must be accompanied by a deposit in the amount of $100.00.
To be paid by the methods as determined by the Local Authorities Election Act.
PART 6. Voting Hours on Election Day
6.1 Every voting station in Thorhild County shall be kept open continuously on
election day from 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
PART 7. Institutional Voting
7.1 The Returning Officer is authorized to designate the location of one or more
institutional voting stations for an election.
PART 8. BYLAW REPEALED
8.1 Municipal Election Bylaw 09-2021 is hereby repealed.
This Bylaw comes into effect upon the date of the passing of third and final reading.
