# Building Bylaw
The City of Courtenay's Building Bylaw helps makes sure all construction and renovation work in our community is safe, energy-efficient, and compliant with provincial standards. It outlines when building permits are required, the responsibilities of property owners and contractors, and the role of building officials in reviewing plans and conducting inspections. The bylaw also supports the BC Energy Step Code, encouraging more sustainable, low-emission buildings.
Before starting any construction project -- big or small -- check to see if a permit is needed. For more information or to apply for a permit, contact the City's Building division.
