BYLAW 6474

BYLAW 6474
A bylaw to regulate the keeping of bees pursuant to section 933(i) of the Municipal Act RSBC 1970 c.290.
The Council for The Corporation of The District of North Vancouver enacts the following:
Title
1.
This bylaw may be cited as "BEE KEEPING BYLAW".
Responsibility of Bee Keeper
2.
Every person keeping bees and the owner of any parcel of land on which bees are kept must:
(a) provide adequate water to prevent the bees from seeking water from other sources, such as
neighbourhood swimming pools, birdbaths, ponds or other bodies of water;
(b) take all reasonable measures to prevent swarming and aggressive behaviour by the bees; and
(c) if the bees swarm or show signs of aggressive behaviour, ensure that the bees are requeened.

General Regulations
3.
Beekeeping is permitted in conformity with the following regulations:
(a) Not more than 2 colonies of bees are permitted on a parcel having an area less than 1100 square
metres.

(b) A beehive is not permitted within 7.5 metres of any parcel line except
(i)
when the hive is situated 2.5 metres or more above the adjacent ground level, or
(ii)
when the hive is situated less than 2 metres above adjacent ground level and behind a solid
fence or hedge more than 2 metres in height running parallel to any parcel line and
extending at least 6 metres beyond the hive in both directions.
Enforcement
4.
A Public Health Officer and a Bylaw Enforcement Officer may enter at all reasonable times upon any
property in order to ascertain whether or not the provisions of this bylaw are being obeyed.
Offence and Penalties
5. (a) A person who:
i. contravenes a provision of this bylaw;

ii. causes, consents to, allows or permits an act or thing to be done contrary to this bylaw;
iii. neglects or refrains from doing anything required by a provision of this bylaw; or
iv. fails to comply with any order, direction or notice given under this bylaw,
commits an offence and is subject to the penalties imposed by this bylaw and the Offence
Act.
(b) Each instance that a contravention of a provision of this bylaw occurs and each day that a
contravention occurs or continues shall constitute a separate offence.
(c) A person found guilty of an offence under this bylaw is subject to a fine of not less than $1,000.00
and not more than $50,000.00 for every instance that an offence occurs or each day that it occurs
or continues, plus the cost of prosecution.

Obstruction
6.
A person must not interfere with, delay, obstruct or impede a Public Health Officer or Bylaw
Enforcement Officer or designate or other person lawfully authorized to enforce this bylaw in the
performance of duties under this bylaw.
