## Bylaws
Bylaws are local regulatory laws that keep our city safe and moving. A bylaw is no different from any other law. It is enforceable with penalties, challengeable in court, and must comply with all other provincial and federal laws.
Bylaws are created and maintained through provincial legislation -- such as the Community Charter and Local Government Act -- which specify which bylaws a municipality can create. The council establishes bylaws according to the district's needs to regulate, prohibit or impose requirements. The District of Vanderhoof's bylaws is maintained by the Corporate Services office.

## Zoning Bylaw
The Zoning Bylaw governs land use and the form, siting, height and density of all development within the District's boundaries to provide for the orderly development of the community and to avoid conflicts between incompatible uses.
The Zoning Bylaw is a "rule book" that controls land use and development. It regulates exactly how land may be used, where buildings and other structures can be located, the types of buildings that are permitted, lot sizes and dimensions, parking requirements, building heights and setbacks from the street. The Zoning Bylaw is a major implementation tool of the Official Community Plan.
The Bylaw divides the District into residential, commercial, agricultural, institutional, industrial and other zones. Each of these zones has its own specific regulations.

## Bylaw Enforcement
Bylaw Enforcement responds to complaints from the public and other government agencies, and identifies property use issues but does not respond to civil issues. Information regarding the complainant is kept confidential unless the complaint ends up in the court system.
**What the Bylaw Enforcement department does:**
* Serve the needs of the community on a complaint-only basis
* Investigates bylaw complaints
* Enforces bylaw regulations and standards
* Achieves resolutions to bylaw infractions through voluntary compliance or enforcement
**Bylaw Enforcement Officers enforce bylaws to deal with common complaints such as:**
* Traffic Enforcement
* Parking
* Unsightly Premises
* Garbage Cart Offenses
* Sidewalk Snow Removal
* Noise
* Zoning

In 2018, Council adopted the new Animal Control Bylaw, which contains important provisions for animal welfare, control, licensing, duties of Vanderhoof animal owners, penalties, and enforcement. Review the bylaw:
