Boissevain & Morton Cemetery
Policies & Guidelines
2023
1. Definitions:
A. Cemetery: land used for the burial of corpses and/or human remains
B. Flat Marker: lawn marker placed flush with the surrounding turf
C. Landmark: corner pegs used to mark the boundaries of a lot or plot
D. Plot: an area of land sufficient for two or more graves.
E. Lot: an area of land sufficient for a single grave.
F. Memorial: tombstones, headstones, flat markers.
G. Monument: tombstones and headstones but excludes flat markers.
H. Monument Dealer: those who manufacture, sell or install memorials
I. Original Memorial: the first memorial placed on a lot or plot.
J. Original Flat Marker: the first marker placed on a lot or a plot.
K. Owner: proprietor with title & deed to a burial lot or plot
L. Perpetual Care: ongoing maintenance for cemetery & columbarium.
M. Perpetual Care Funds: funds collected according to The Cemetery's Act and/or
under the terms of a contract, trust, gift or otherwise, and disbursed for the
perpetual care of the cemetery and columbarium.
N. Caretaker: employee hired by Boissevain-Morton Cemetery Board
O. B & M: Boissevain-Morton

2. Interments:
a) applications for interment include Certificate of Cremation or Burial Permit or any
other, requested information
b) requests should be submitted in writing...cemetery is not responsible for
misunderstandings or errors
c) deeds and receipts will be given for paid plots/lots
d) grave openings & closings done only by Cemetery employees or assigned
contractors
e) interment of urns:
i.
fees include opening/closing of burial site
ii.
subsequent opening/closing of burial site must occur on the same day
between 8:00 AM & 4:00 PM from Monday to Friday
f) interment of coffins
i.
submit size of coffin at its largest part
ii.
funeral directors must close & fasten coffin before it is lowered into grave
iii.
burials must be completed between 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Monday-Friday
3. Digging of Graves:
a) only authorized personnel dig graves & complete interments
b) 48 hours notice must be given 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Monday-Friday

4. Disinterment:
a) conducted in accordance with Sections 23-27, Manitoba Public Health Act

b) a municipal representative will be on Cemetery grounds during the disinterment
c) fees: see Schedule "A"
Note: replacement materials & hourly labor fees are the responsibility of client
5. Cemetery Maintenance:
B & M Cemetery is solely responsible for maintenance - including plantings, grading,
improving of graves, etc., and has exclusive rights to enter plots/lots
6. Foundations, Monuments and Markers:
a) Grave-site work needs Caretaker permission and guidance
b) Boissevain & Morton Cemetery:

Is not responsible for damage to monuments & markers

Determines whether monuments need repair &/or straightening
c) Grave covers and mausoleums are disallowed
d) Monuments:
one for each lot
requires foundations according to specification. See schedule 'B'.
Flat Markers:
one for each urn up to 6 per lot
see schedule 'B' for specifications

urns buried according to specs. See schedule 'B'
e) Anyone working on plots/lots, monuments and markers is liable for damages
7.
Conditions: governing plots & Lots:
a) fees: see Schedule "A"
b) monies from sales used for cemetery maintenance
c) B & M Cemetery may set fees for items not listed in Schedule 'A' & 'B'
d) sale & transfer:
may not be sold by owners
may be transferred to others either in a will or with a letter of permission
may be returned to B & M - without reimbursement
will be returned to B & M if left dormant for 80 years
e) B & M Cemetery reserves the right to designate special sections for alternate use & to
impose stipulations for monuments, markers, etc.
8. Perpetual Care: see Fees - Schedule "A"
9. Miscellaneous:
a) Vehicles must remain on roadways & restrict speeds to 10 km/hr or less
b) pets must be leashed
c) B & M Cemetery will designate burial site of the indigent.

Schedule "B"
1.
Monuments must have foundations which meet following specifications:
Be 15.24 cm. less than the width of the lot or plot.
Be centred.
Have a minimum thickness of 7.62 cm, an average thickness of 10.24 cm & a base
not exceeding 45.72 cm in depth.
2.
Flat Markers: Must not exceed 30.48 cm x 15.24 cm x 10.16 cm.
3.
Urn specs: Cremation urns must be placed from top to bottom based on the order they
were interned. See diagram below.
