Business Grant Policy
Sponsored and administered by the Norfolk Treherne Community Development Corporation
(NTCDC)
Funds consist of a limited pool of $35,000.
This support is available to new business start-ups, expansions and purchases of existing
businesses in the Municipality of Norfolk Treherne. A grant is available, up to a maximum of
$5,000 to cover 50% of costs incurred during the start up or purchasing process. Costs must be
intangible and specific to that particular business.
Examples of eligible costs include:
building permits, licences, name registration fees, permits, costs for incorporation, engineer's
stamped drawings, initial blueprints, legal fees for real estate purchase, hall rental to notify the
public of the concept, ads in papers, mailouts, financing application fees, business plan advice,
and other intangibles that the committee may deem reasonable. Purchases of goodwill or a
partnership share within a firm are not eligible, however the costs associated with those
purchases are. Primary Agriculture is not eligible.
The grant must be applied for within 12 months of business start-up or change in
ownership.
Assistance with the application is available from the Community Development Officer (CDO).
The completed application, along with paid invoices, must be submitted to the CDO at NTCDC
prior to any reimbursement. The operating business must be situated within the Municipality of
Norfolk Treherne. The grant will only be payable once the business is open.
A committee within the Norfolk Treherne Community Development Corporation, which will include
the municipal council representative, will review each application to determine eligibility. A letter
of approval of financing may be required. The NTCDC reserves the right to cancel the grant at
any time.

Business Grant Examples of Eligible Costs
1) Hairdresser renting a building to set up a salon
- Eligible to receive grant for business license, initial ad in the paper, legal costs to set up a
lease
2) New housing development
- Eligible to receive grant for incorporation costs, drawings and blueprints, hall rental, ad in
paper, all to a maximum of 50% and $5000
3) Purchase of an existing business by a non-arm's length individual/group
- Eligible because we want to encourage the continuity of existing family businesses and also
want to support the younger generation staying in the area
- Incorporation costs, legal fees to transfer property, shares, etc.
4) Professional currently practicing in the municipality who chooses to incorporate
- Does not qualify because there is no business purchase
- If the professional chooses to buy into the existing practice (if not already an owner), then
those associated costs would be eligible
5) Individual who set up crop scouting and consulting company for agriculture
- Eligible to receive grant because this is considered a commercial business that services
agriculture
6) Existing business owner in town builds a new location

Eligible since this is considered an expansion and it shows a strong commitment to the
community
