Policy Name: Community Garden Rules and Guidelines Number: RD-11 Date of Original Adoption by Council: March 20, 2013 Date of Revisions approved by Council: May 20, 2019 Clerk's Signature: Page 1 of 3 Village of New Maryland - Policy The Community Garden will operate seasonally, late May/early June until October, dependent on the weather. The Community Garden is located adjacent to the Sunrise Estates Park, with access off Weston Street. 28 Community Garden Plots are available, each plot will measure approximately 8' x 16' in size, as per Village Staff measurements (after pathways are identified and marked). The Village will provide a minimum of two water tanks and two rain barrels for the Community Garden and Village Staff will endeavor to maintain an adequate water supply. Plots will be assigned by Village Staff and on a first come first served basis. FEES The fee to use a 8' x 16' plot in the Community Garden each season will be $25 (plus HST). Payment is required prior to use of the Community Garden. Payments are made payable to the Village of New Maryland. Refunds will only be considered when a User must withdraw their use of the Community Garden based on medical grounds, in advance of their use of the Community Garden. Refund requests must be accompanied by the original receipt that was provided to the User at the time of registration. RULES & GUIDELINES Each User of the Community Garden is required to adhere to the established rules and guidelines for the garden. Each user will be required to sign a copy of the rules and guidelines in advance of use each season. Users will keep weeds at a minimum and maintain the area immediately surrounding their plot. Users will keep trash and litter out of the plot as well as adjacent pathways and fences. Users will not use fertilizers, insecticides, or weed repellant that will in any way affect other plots. Users will conserve water and ensure the water is turned off after each usage. Users will report any vandalism, theft, damage, or leaks to the water source, garden, etc. to the Recreation Office in a timely manner. If a User chooses to put up a fence around their assigned plot, it shall not exceed 4ft. in height. If a User must abandon their plot for any reason, they will notify the Recreation Office. The User must agree to be considerate of the neighboring plots by not planting sprawling crops or tall ones that may interfere with neighboring plots. The User understands that plots will be inspected by the Village to ensure that the rules and guidelines are being adhered to. Visitors are welcomed at the Community Garden site, however, users are to ensure that young children are supervised and dogs are kept on their leash so other plots are not disturbed. Users are to dispose of weeds and plant material outside of the fenced garden area for composting. Users will clear their plot of corner stakes, fencing, trellises, string and all inorganic materials by the end of September. Failure to comply with the rules and regulations during the season may result in loss of future gardening privileges. If a User's plot becomes unkempt Users will be given 1 weeks' notice to clean it up. If the plot changes are not met, then the plot may be reassigned or tilled by the Village. Users will supply their own tools, equipment, and plants and or seeds for their plot. Users understand that the Community Garden is open from dawn to dusk. Users are asked to exercise caution when entering or exiting the Community Garden area and to be watchful of children playing or community traffic on adjacent properties that border the access road. LIABILITY The Village of New Maryland is not responsible for the actions of Community Garden Users. Individuals use the Community Garden at their own risk.
