Town of Berwick - Remuneration and Expenses of Council, Committees, Boards and Agencies 1 Town of Berwick Remuneration and Expenses of Council, Committees, Boards and Agencies Department: Council Policy No: X.XX Adopted: April 13, 1999 1. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor shall be paid a salary of $13,185 and 5,938 respectively per year, in addition to all other sums payable under this Policy. As of November 1, 2004, Councillors remuneration will be set at $5,278 to be increased by the rate reflected in the CPI for Nova Scotia for the preceding calendar year, with the rate of increase not to exceed 5% in any given year. 2. One-third of the sums paid to the Councillors, Mayor and Deputy Mayor pursuant to Sections 1,2, and 3 of this policy shall be deemed to be an allowance for expenses incident to the discharge of the duties of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Councillors as elected officials of the Town of Berwick. Council shall annually pass a motion stating that 1/3 of the remuneration specified in Section 1 be deemed a non-taxable allowance for expenses. 3. The Clerk Treasurer shall pay from the funds provided for the purpose, salaries to the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Councillors in twenty-six (26) installments, each such installment to consist of one-twenty-sixth (1/26) of the respective annual salary. 4. Councillors, or the Mayor, or the Deputy Mayor who are appointed as Council representatives to Boards, Commissions, or Agencies, and who are entitled to remuneration from those committees, boards or commissions, shall be entitled to keep that remuneration as payment for serving as Council representative. 5. Members of Town Council and persons who are not members of Town Council who are appointed by Town Council to serve as members of The Berwick Electric Commission shall be entitled to an honorarium of $600 per year, payable in one installment. 6. Councilors, Mayor, and Deputy Mayor shall be reimbursed by the Town for all reasonable and appropriate expenses for travel, meals and accommodation incurred in the course of carrying out their duties and responsibilities including attendance at courses, seminars and conferences with prior approval of Town Council in accordance with the Town Travel Policy. The amount claimable for use of a personal vehicle on approved Town business shall be the rate paid by the Province of Nova Scotia. This review process shall include an opportunity for the public input on the policy prior to final adoption by Town Council.
