Page 1 of 2 TOWN OF BRIDGEWATER FLAG FLYING POLICY PURPOSE This policy is designed to establish a consistent protocol for the flying of flags on Town of Bridgewater properties. POLICY Municipally-Owned Flagpoles: The Town will fly the Federal Flag, the Provincial, and the Town of Bridgewater Flag on their flagpoles. Other government flags may be flown as deemed appropriate by the CAO, such as in the case of a visiting dignitary. Municipally-Owned Special Purpose Flagpole: The following guidelines will apply to all requests to fly a flag in recognition of a special event or cause: a. All applications will require initial approval by Council at a regularly scheduled open Council meeting. Council approval is not required for subsequent annual requests. However, applicants' must continue to apply on an annual basis. b. Approved special purpose flags will only be permitted on the special purpose flagpoles located at Shipyards Landing and at the DesBrisay Museum. c. All requests to fly a special purpose flag must be received in writing [application form is attached] and state: - The significance of the flag; - The requested duration to fly the flag; - A contact person to coordinate logistics. d. Town Council may not approve a request to fly a flag if the flag: - Propagates hate; - Advertises a for-profit corporate entity; - Is in poor condition and detracts from the appearance of Town property. e. All approved requests will be granted on a first come, first serve basis. f. Provided that the flag and all necessary ropes and attachments have been provided by the requesting organization, Town staff will raise and lower the flag in accordance with the terms of the permission granted.
