## PURPOSE
- To increase and improve the visibility for both pedestrian and vehicle safety.
- Establish guidelines for the installation and payment of streetlights with the Municipality of the County of Victoria.
## SCOPE
- Municipality of the County of Victoria Street lights are installed exclusively to illuminate public roads and pedestrian infrastructure. Any secondary benefit such as perceived personal security; or the lighting of yards, driveways or private property is considered coincidental and not allowed under this Policy.
- This Policy is to be reviewed once each fiscal year.
- Furthermore, it is beyond the capability of the Municipality of the County of Victoria to provide streetlighting on public streets and roads for pedestrian traffic where no pedestrian infrastructure exists.
## POLICY
## Installation:
- The Municipality will consider install a maximum of one (1) individual streetlight per fiscal year, per District. If someone petitions the County, then Council would look at it on an individual basis.
- Lights must be facing toward the road and directly on the roadside to be a municipal light.
- Upon recommendation from an individual Councillor in conjunction with the RCMP and the provincial Department of Public Works, the CAO will consider installing individual streetlights at dangerous intersections that, if not lighted, may cause harm to residents of the Municipality. These lights will not be solar powered and, are considered the yearly allowance.
- Lights must be installed only on poles already existing, within the highway right-of-way.
- Lights shall not be installed on private property.
- Lights shall, if possible be a 55-watt LED, or the Nova Scotia Power recommended wattage.
## Removal:
- A Streetlight Removal Form must be filled out and submitted to the Municipality's Executive Assistant.
- If requesting streetlight to be moved from one area to another, a Streetlight Removal Form must be filled out and submitted to the Municipality's Executive Assistant and must meet the requirements from the Purpose and Scope of this Policy.
- Upon receipt of the Streetlight Removal Form, the Municipality will request Nova Scotia Power to remove the streetlight as requested.
