Policy and Procedure SAND BAG POLICY ______________________________________________________________________ CONTEXT The Township distributes sandbags from the Public Works Garage. These are available each year, but are in higher demand during flooding events and anticipated potential flooding events. The direction of Council, the Township has established a policy that sets out the Township's response based on the water levels on Mississippi Lake, as reported by MVCA. POLICY 1) Normal Water Levels (135.24 or lower): The Township will keep 1000 sand bags at the Public Works Garage at all times. Residents may purchase sand bags and sand from the Township at cost. 2) Flood Watch (135.25 to 135.49): The Township will ensure there is a stock of 3000 sand bags and sand at the Public Works Garage at all times. These will be made available for residents to pick up for free. 3) Flood Warning (135.50 to 135.59): The Township will ensure there is a stock of 10,000 sand bags and sand at the Public Works Garage at all times. These will be made available for residents to pick up for free. The Township will also deliver sand bags and sand to the following locations for residents to pick up for free: - Sand bags and sand will be dropped as needed at the intersection of Scotch Corners Road and Ikwe Point Road. - Sand bags and sand will be dropped as needed at the intersection of McCann Road and Rathwell's Shore Road. - Sand bags and sand will be dropped as needed at the intersection of First Avenue and Cedar Avenue. - Sand bags and sand will be dropped as needed at the intersection of Petrie Road and Avenue 2. - Sand bags and sand will be dropped as needed at the intersection of 9th Line and Moonlight Bay Road. 4) Major Flood Event (135.60 and higher): The Township will ensure there is a stock of 10,000 sand bags and sand at the Public Works Garage at all times. These will be made available for residents to pick up for free. The Township will continue to deliver sand bags and sand to all locations included at the Flood Warning level, as well as to the following locations, for residents to pick up for free: - Sand bags and sand will be dropped as needed at the intersection of Rosehill Lane and Loch End Road. - Sand bags and sand will be dropped as needed at the intersection of Patty Place and Patty Lane. - Sand bags and sand will be dropped as needed at the intersection of Lake Avenue East and Arklan Road In the case of a Flood Warning or Major Flood Event, once the water has receded, residents may drop off unused and emptied contaminated bags at any of the above drop off points for a period up to one month after the water has receded to Normal Water Levels. After the period of one month, residents are responsible for returning unused bags to the Public Works Garage, and disposing of contaminated bags. If bags were taken under Flood Watch or Normal Flood Levels, residents are responsible for returning or disposing of bags.
