The Corporation of the Township of Georgian Bluffs
By-law Number 2024-040

Being a By-law to permit backyard poultry in residential areas of the Township.
Whereas, Section 34 of the Planning Act RSO 1990 permits Council to enact by-
laws to control the use of lands within the Municipality; and
Whereas, Council received staff report DEV2024-001 Backyard Poultry
Informational Report at the January 10, 2024 Committee of Whole Meeting; and
Whereas, Council directed staff to permit poultry in residential areas through a
housekeeping amendment to the Zoning By-law;
Therefore, the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Georgian Bluffs
enacts the following:
1.
THAT Section 4 - Definitions of Zoning By-law 2002-020 be amended by
adding the following Definitions:
a. Animal Enclosure Means an accessory structure including pens, runs,
and similar enclosures meant for the keeping or containment of animals
but excluding perimeter fencing of a lot and fenced agricultural fields or
paddocks.
b. Backyard Poultry Means a pullet or hen kept for companionship as a pet
or for the purpose of providing food for the personal consumption of
occupants of a dwelling on the same lot, and shall not include roosters,
waterfowl or other domesticated birds.
c. Hen Means a domesticated female chicken that is at least four months
old.

That Section 5.13 of Zoning By-law 2020-020 be amended as follows:
a. 5.13 Livestock on Residential Lots
Livestock, other than backyard poultry, shall only be permitted on a lot in
the Agricultural or Rural Zone that has a lot area of 0.8 hectares or
greater. Livestock, other than backyard poultry, shall not be permitted on
residential lots.
5.13.1. Backyard poultry shall be permitted on a lot in the Agricultural,
Rural, Residential and Shoreline Residential zones as an
accessory use to a residential use on the same lot provided the
minimum lot size exceeds 0.2 hectares.
5.13.1.1. The keeping of Backyard poultry shall:
a) be restricted to a maximum of six (6) hens and/or pullets.
b) be only permitted on properties where the property owner
resides.
c) be used for food purposes only.
d) not include the keeping of poultry for sale.
e) not include the home slaughter of poultry.

5.13.1.2. A building, shelter, or animal enclosure for keeping backyard
poultry:
a) Shall meet the requirements of Section 5.1.3 (setbacks and yard
requirements); and,
b) Notwithstanding any other provision of this by-law to the
contrary, shall:
i) not exceed 10 square metres in total floor area, inclusive of
outdoor enclosure; and,
ii) not be nearer than 10 metres from a dwelling on an adjacent
lot.
iii) provide each bird with a minimum of 0.4 square metres of
coop area and 1 square metre of covered outdoor enclosure.
iv) provide and maintain a floor of any combination of
vegetated or bare earth in each outdoor enclosure.
v) ensure each coop and enclosure is constructed to provide
shelter, light and ventilation and built to prevent entrance
form other animals.
5.13.1.3. All manure generated by the keeping of backyard poultry shall
be stored within an enclosed container with no more than 0.5
cubic metres of manure stored at any one time. All manure not
used for composting or fertilizing shall be properly disposed of
through the municipal waste management program.

That this by-law shall come into force and effect upon being passed by
Council.
