CITY OF MEADOW LAKE BYLAW NO. 7/2014 PROPERTY TAX PENALTIES BYLAW A BYLAW OF THE CITY OF MEADOW LAKE TO PROVIDE FOR THE IMPOSITION OF PENALTIES FOR LATE PAYMENTS OF TAXES. WHEREAS, pursuant to Sections 249 and 250 of The Cities Act, a Council may impose penalties in the year in which a tax is imposed if the tax remains unpaid after the date shown on the tax notice, at the rate set out in the resolution or bylaw authorizing the imposition of penalties. Therefore the Council of the City of Meadow Lake, in the Province of Saskatchewan, in open meeting assembled hereby enacts as follows: PART I - INTRODUCTION 1. TITLE This Bylaw may be cited as the "Property Tax Penalties Bylaw". 2. PURPOSE The purpose of this Bylaw is to levy a penalty for non-payment of taxes when due in the enforcement of collection of property and business taxes of the City. 3. SCOPE The Bylaw will apply within the corporate boundaries of the City of Meadow Lake. PART II - DEFINITIONS 4. Whenever in this Bylaw the following words or terms are used they shall, unless the context otherwise provides, be held to have the following meanings: (a) "City" means the City of Meadow Lake; (b) "City Treasurer" shall mean the individual in charge of the finances of the City of Meadow Lake or designate; (c) "Council" shall mean the City Council of the City of Meadow Lake; (d) "Current Taxes" shall mean taxes levied during the calendar year on land, buildings and businesses in the City but do not include frontage taxes; (e) "Frontage Taxes" shall mean taxes levied for local improvements. PART III - TAX PENALTIES 5. There shall be levied a penalty on unpaid taxes and frontage taxes outstanding as follows: (a) On January 1st of each year a penalty of 9% shall be applied. (b) A penalty of 1% will be applied on the first day of August, September, October, November and December each year. (c) The penalty charges are to be added to and form part of the tax roll. The City Treasurer shall carry out the provisions of this Bylaw and, in the event of a dispute in the application of the Bylaw, the decision of Council shall be final. 7. Bylaw No. 7/2012 is hereby repealed. 8. This Bylaw shall come into force on January 1, 2015. Introduced and read a first time this 8th day of September, 2014.
