General:
A person shall not kindle or maintain or authorize to be kindled or maintained any open
burning unless conducted and approved in accordance with Section 307 of the 2018
IFC.
City of Las Vegas Municipal Code:
9.24.030 - Burning of garbage and rubbish:
It is unlawful for any person, for the purpose of burning garbage, rubbish, dead animals
or dirt, to kindle or maintain any bonfire or knowingly to furnish the materials for any
such fire, or to authorize any such fire to be kindled or maintained in any garbage or
rubbish receptacle, or on any street, alley, road, lane or public grounds or upon any
private lot; provided, however, that rubbish may be burned in an incinerator duly
approved by both the Chief of the Department of Fire Services and the Building
Inspector.
BONFIRES: Bonfires are Prohibited Valley Wide. SNFC 307.4.1
Definitions:
OPEN BURNING: The burning of materials wherein products of combustion are
emitted directly into the ambient air without passing through a stack or chimney from
an enclosed chamber. Open burning does not include road flares, smudge pots and
similar devices associated with safety or occupational uses typically considered open
flames, recreational fires or use of portable outdoor fireplaces. For the purpose of this
definition, a chamber shall be regarded as enclosed when, during the time combustion
occurs, only apertures, ducts, stacks, flues or chimneys necessary to provide
combustion air and permit the escape of exhaust gas are open.
RECREATIONAL FIRES: An outdoor fire burning materials other than rubbish where
the fuel being burned is not contained in an incinerator, outdoor fireplace, portable
outdoor fireplace, barbeque grill or barbeque pit and has a total fuel area of 3 feet or
less in a diameter and 2 feet or less in height for pleasure, religious, ceremonial
cooking, warmth or similar purposes.
Portable Outdoor Fireplaces/Chimenea's: portable outdoor fireplaces/Chimenea's
shall be used in accordance with the manufactures instructions and shall not be
operated within 15 feet of a structure or combustible materials.

These requirements are valley wide with the exception of some of the open burning
permit process.
Are bonfires legal within the City of Las Vegas? NO
Is burning of garbage or rubbish legal in the City of Las Vegas? NO
Is open burning legal in the City of Las Vegas? Yes with the following exception; open
burning that is offensive or objectionable because of smoke emissions or when
atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous SHALL BE
PROHIBITED
Are recreational fires legal in the City of Las Vegas? Yes
Are portable outdoor fireplaces/chimenea's legal in the City of Las Vegas? Yes as long
as they follow manufactures guidelines.
Are permits required in the City of Las Vegas? Yes per section IFC 105.6.32
