We're happy to share some information about several local ordinances that will help to make your stay as enjoyable and convenient as possible. To contact the Warwick Police Department: Police Emergencies: 911 Routine / Non-Emergencies: (401) 468-4200 Trash Collection Per city ordinance, "The accumulation of garbage, litter, refuse, rubbish, trash and other deleterious substances on the premises of private residences, commercial institutions and in the streets and alleys greatly increases the danger of fire and spread of infections, contagious and epidemic diseases, causes diminution in value of other property in the neighborhood, and shall hereby constitute a public menace and nuisance." The city's ordinance requires that any owner of the premises, or his/her agent, shall provide trash and recycling receptacles for weekly curbside sanitation and recycling collection. The city uses an automated collection system for the pickup of trash and recycling. Please place trash in the grey carts. Recycling goes into the blue or green cart. For information about what is recyclable, please visit https://www.warwickri.gov/sanitation-recycling. Please contact the property owner or his/her agent if they have not provided both waste and recycling receptacles. The ordinance also states that "No person shall dump, deposit or discard any refuse, rubbish, waste, glass, broken ware, tin cans, so-called garbage, filth or trash of any kind upon public or private property within the confines of the city, except at such places as are properly designated for such purpose by the city council. No person shall deposit any garbage in any other place than such garbage receptacle as herein prescribed. No person shall cast litter in or upon any portion of any park, beach, playground or recreational area except in provided receptacles." Closing of streets and prohibition of parking For the purpose of facilitating the removal of snow, the city's director of public works may, in his/her discretion, declare a parking ban on such streets or portions thereof as he/she deems necessary. It shall be unlawful for the owner or operator of a motor vehicle to park a motor vehicle in violation of any parking ban declared by the director of public works for the purpose of facilitating the removal of snow. The director of public works is authorized to cause the removal of all motor vehicles parked in violation of the provisions of this section. All costs and expenses of removing such vehicles shall be borne by the owners thereof. Local news media are advised when a parking ban is in effect, and this information is typically shared on their websites and/or social media, in addition to being broadcast. The Warwick Police Department's Facebook page also posts information about parking bans, and information is also typically posted at warwickri.gov. Noise City of Warwick ordinances declare it a nuisance "to make, cause or allow to be made from any premises that is owned, occupied or controlled by such person upon any residential use", which includes, "any unnecessary noise or sounds which equal or exceed the following limits: Any noise which exceeds the ambient noise level by ten dBA or more, when measured at the nearest property line or, in the case of multiple-family residential buildings, when measured anywhere in one dwelling unit with respect to a noise emanating from another dwelling unit or from common space in the same building, and which is physically annoying to persons or which is harsh, prolonged, unnatural or unusual in its time, place and use so as to cause physical discomfort, or is injurious to the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of the city. Upon receiving a complaint of excessive noise, the building official and/or the police department will respond to determine compliance or noncompliance with the city's noise ordinance. Please refer to the City of Warwick noise ordinance for more information. 8:00 a.m.--10:00 p.m. 60 dBA 10:00 p.m.--8:00 a.m. 50 dBA Consumption of alcoholic beverages in public spaces Within the City of Warwick, it is unlawful for any person to possess, consume from and/or transport any open container containing alcoholic beverages: - on any public street, public sidewalk or public way; except that it shall not be unlawful to so possess, consume from and/or transport such a container at events or festivals duly licensed by the city when such license expressly permits such possession, consumption and/or transportation, but only to the extent of and in accordance with the terms and conditions of any such licensing. - at public bathing and swimming facilities, beaches, playgrounds, ballfields, park and recreation areas, and all other public areas in the city, unless specifically authorized by the board of public safety, upon consultation of the director of parks and recreation. Operation of small motorized vehicles Please note that city ordinances prohibit the operation of motor scooters, minibikes, motorbikes or other like vehicle in city parks or on the premises of any city-operated waterfront, beach or recreational facility. Minibikes, automobiles, motorcycles, motor scooters, motorbikes, recreational vehicles, campers, dune or sand buggies, so-called, or other type of vehicle or device propelled by an internal combustion engine are prohibited in or upon any city-owned or city-operated beach or waterfront area. Off-road use is also prohibited on city- owned property. Valid registered motorcycles shall be allowed to enter the areas normally utilized by other motor vehicles. Interior lights to be lighted when vehicle is stopped by police at night Should a police officer or other law enforcement agent stop your vehicle when it's dark out, please note that city ordinance requires that you turn on the interior lights of the vehicle until such time as such officer allows the vehicle to continue in its operation.
