## Understanding Sewer Systems
There are two sewer systems that connect to your home and each system is critical to managing and removing a different type of water.
### The Sanitary Sewer
Soiled water from toilets and soapy water from showers or laundry is called wastewater. Wastewater is collected in pipes that run throughout your home. Then it leaves your house through one pipe running beneath your home to the street and leads to the sanitary sewer system.
The sanitary sewer collects wastewater and sends it to the Town's wastewater stabilization ponds where it is treated and eventually evaporates.
The sanitary sewer system is maintained by the Town of Legal.
### The Storm Sewer
Rain water and melting snow is called storm water. There is a storm sewer pipe that runs beneath the road outside your home where it collects storm water and leads it to the storm sewer system.
Your home, your neighborhood and the roads running through it are designed to channel storm water. Your neighborhood is graded in such a way that water will run in the right direction toward the storm sewer. Roads are designed to withstand large amounts of water during large storm events but sometimes, water may rise over the curb and flow onto your property. That is why it is very important to check the grade of your property and to assess it from time to time to make sure water continues to drain away from your foundation.
The storm sewer is maintained by the Town of Legal.
### The Difference between Storm and Sanitary Sewers
The sanitary sewer is a fairly small pipe designed to carry wastewater generated in your home. The storm sewer is a much larger pipe designed to carry rain water and spring snow melt.
## Understanding a Homeowners' Responsibility
Homeowners have certain responsibilities when it comes to maintaining the sewer system as it relates to the home.
### The Sanitary Sewer
The pipes throughout your home that collect wastewater are a homeowner's responsibility. Keeping these pipes free of debris - like hair or grease - keeps them functioning properly.
The section of pipe that runs beneath your home to the property line is also a homeowner's responsibility. If that section of pipe gets clogged with large objects being flushed down a toilet, by a large amount of grease from the kitchen sink, or by the roots of the trees on your lawn, it is the homeowner's responsibility to have it cleared out.
If you think you are having problems with the pipe beneath your home, contact the Town Office.
*Remember, sinks and toilets are not a garbage can. Please dispose of diapers, large objects, hair and grease into the garbage and not into your pipes. Backups are most commonly caused by items that should never be flushed down the toilet or poured down the drain.*
**Meet the "Unflushables": Baby Wipes, Cleaning Wipes, Condoms, Disposable Diapers, Facial Wipes, Grease, Hair, Medications, Sanitary Pads, Tampons or Tampon Applicators, Trash and Garbage.**
### The Storm Sewer
The storm sewer carries storm water from roads, paved areas, roofs and surface drains as well as from building foundations. The storm sewer is mostly the responsibility of the Town. But water on your property is a homeowners' responsibility and preventative maintenance can make sure storm water gets into the storm sewer as easily as possible:
* Keep the storm sewer cover free of debris like leaves and snow.
* Consider disconnecting your downspouts if they are directly connected to the underground storm drainage pipes. Make sure that they run away from your home and onto your lawn or garden.
* Check the grading of your property. You want water to flow away from your home and toward the storm sewer.
In the case of a large storm, we ask everyone to be patient. Water will eventually make its way into the storm sewer. Do not go onto the road and open up manhole covers. This may divert water into the sanitary sewer - the sanitary sewer system is not designed for storm water.
Remember, the storm sewer is designed to carry large quantities of water. Make sure the water outside your home is draining toward the storm sewer cover, where it will flow into storm water management system.
