**MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF OPEN BURNING**
Residents should be aware of some basic rules about outdoor burning and District of Lantzville Fire Protection Bylaw No. 185, 2019.
**No Open Air Fires are permitted on any beach within the boundaries of the District of Lantzville at any time.**
No Beach Fires are permitted; however, the use of portable propane campfire apparatus is permitted if:
* using a CSA or ULC approved apparatus
* flame height is less than 15 cm
* used between 11:00 am to 8:00 pm only
- No Beach Fires - Except Portable Propane Campfire Apparatus - Effective May 27, 2019
**April 16th October 14th** - Open Air burning (fire piles on the ground) and Incinerator Fires are PROHIBITED.
**October 15th - April 15th** - Open Air burning and Incinerator Fires are permitted subject to conditions - see Bylaw No. 185.
As of October 15th, backyard burning is open again as long as the requirements related to Bylaw No. 185 and the Ventilation Index are followed. An open air fire (AKA-burn pile, bonfire, backyard fire) is permitted provided that every reasonable alternative for reducing, reusing or recycling debris has been pursued to minimize the amount of debris to be open burned. No prohibited materials may be burned. Agricultural Clearing Waste Fires are only permitted during the period October 15th to November 15th. Details are available in the Bylaw. Conditions apply. Confirm...before you burn!
**To check the Ventilation Index before your burn:
- call the Ministry of Environment at 1.888.281.2992** and follow the prompts to hear Environment Canada's daily ventilation index for Central Vancouver Island to confirm if burning is permitted.
OR
- **visit the Ministry of Environment website** at Ministry of Environment Venting Index Information and click on Ventilation index and search the daily ventilation index for CNTRL VAN ISLD to confirm if burning is GOOD otherwise burning is prohibited OR view the Ventilation Index forecast below provided by the Province.
Outdoor burning is restricted when the index is POOR or FAIR. **The conditions must be GOOD on the day you burn and GOOD or FAIR the following day in order to burn per the burning bylaw.** Of note, a clear sunny day isn't a reliable indicator that you can burn - you must check the ventilation index. Be considerate of your neighbours when burning so you don't impact their daily routine or health. Burn materials hot, infrequently and ONLY when venting permits so the smoke goes straight up. See the notes below regarding some basic rules about burning and consideration for your neighbours.

**Notes:** Residents should be aware of a few basic rules when burning: the two most frequently overlooked are those of wind speed and venting. **Burning is not permitted when wind speed exceeds 15 kph.** This is anything much more than a gentle breeze. The venting index is a guide generally applied to burning on a larger scale but residents should be cognizant of smokes ability, or not, to escape. This is a gauge of how well the smoke you produce will rise and not seriously affect your home and others. Rainy days are seldom good days to burn.
**Remember, when you burn, if you find the smoke or the ash fallout offensive at your place, chances are your neighbour does as well.**
Please program these numbers on your phone to assist you in an emergency:
**To report a fire: Call 9-1-1
To report a forest fire: Call 1.800.663.5555 OR \*5555 from a cellular phone
To report a beach fire: Call 250.390.2811**
***Be Proactive. Be Safe. Be Ready! Remember, it just may be you who spots smoke in the forest!***
