It is estimated that almost 10,000 tonnes of plastic debris enter Ontario's lakes and rivers each year. **Quick facts:** * Almost 50% of waste is diverted through blue box or green bins. * 70% of general waste materials from residential, commercial and industrial locations ends up in landfills. * Almost every plastic item we've made since the 1950s is still in our environment. * When food and organics waste break down in landfills it produces harmful greenhouse gases. * Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours. ## What you can do **Around the house** * Become an expert on what goes in the green bin and blue box. * Know hazardous waste items like batteries, electronics, and paint must be taken to special depots, not put in household recycling. * Reuse or properly wash and recycle take-out food containers. * Use up leftover produce in your fridge by making a batch of soup or stir fry. * To cut down on paper towel use, use a dishcloth with soap and water to clean your surfaces. * Reduce the use of disposable plastics like plates, cutlery, bags. * Recycle mason jars for multiple purposes such as drinking glasses, vases, etc. * Give old products new life instead of throwing them away. For example, using old containers for storage. * Donate gently used plastic toys, clothing, and household items instead of throwing them away. **Around your backyard** * Create your own compost station outside for your garden soil. * Use old towels to clean your outside windows, tabletops and chairs. * Prevent food waste by growing what you need. **When shopping** * Take your own bags to the grocery store instead of purchasing new ones each time. * Purchase gently used clothing and items at thrift stores or garage sales. * Avoid food waste by planning your meals in advance and buying groceries for your weekly recipes. * Purchase beeswax food wraps instead of plastic wrap. * Purchase reusable straws instead of plastic straws. * Buy goods with less packaging. **What the Town of Erin has done** * Sorted waste receptacles have been added to Town facilities and downtown areas. * The organics 'Green Bin' has recently been added to Town Hall to remove organic waste from the waste stream and keep out of the landfills. * Water bottle filling stations are utilized in some Town facilities and parks. * The Town has launched the Single-Use Plastic Reduction Program; and. * Litter-less lunches are promoted in Town facilities. ## Contact Us: [email protected] 519.855.4407
