# Newsletters and Other Resources
**History** - The Corporation of the Town of Laurentian Hills was formed through the second round of the Provincial Government's amalgamation process in 2000. The United Townships of Rolph, Buchanan, Wylie and McKay and the Village of Chalk River became one.
The history of Laurentian Hills has been researched and written in a book by Jennifer Mercer. "Staying the Run: A History of the United Townships of Rolph, Buchanan, Wylie and McKay" is available at our local libraries and the Rolph, Buchanan, Wylie and McKay historical society.

**TAXES** - Your INTERIM bill is mailed out at the end of Janurary. The first installment is due the third week in February and the second installment is due the third week of May. Your FINAL bill is mailed out at the end of July. The first installment is due the third week of August and the second installment is due the third week of October.
**Property owners can use alternative payment options to pay their property tax and water and sewer billings.
Online Banking** - Click HERE for a list of accepted banks. Add the "Town of Laurentian Hills", "Laurentian Hills Town/Taxes", "Laurentian Hills Taxes" or "Town of Laurentian Hills water and sewer" as a payee through your financial institution online banking. Please allow 2 - 5 business days for processing.
**Monthly Pre-authorized Payment Plan** - Click HERE for a Pre-authorized form. Withdrawals are debited on the 15th day of each month. Residents can complete and submit the form through email or in office. A void cheque or copy of your banking information is required.
**In Person at the Town of Laurentian Hills** - Cash or Cheque only.
**In Person at participating banks** - Scotiabank, Bank of Montreal and the Credit Union.
**Drop Boxes**are located at the main office door at 34465 Highway 17, Point Alexander (cheques only) as well as at 19 Railway Street, Chalk River up the ramp in the wall. (cheques only) Please include your payment in a sealed envelope. If you require a receipt, clearly indicate and provide your email.
**Call our office at 613-584-3114 to get your balance on water/sewer/taxes.**
Property taxes are based on the assessment of your property. If you have questions regarding your property assessment, contact the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation at 1-866-296-6722.
**Water Testing Bottles** - Water Testing bottles are available at 34465 Highway 17 at the front office counter for residents with a well. (8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday) During the months **September to April** drop off your water samples on **Tuesdays.** During the months **May to August** drop off your water samples on **Mondays and Wednesdays**. **It is best to try to take the sample after lunch and drop it off prior to 4 pm.** The day your water is taken it **must be submitted the same day**. Hand your filled water bottle to the Town office counter at 34465 Highway 17 before 4 pm on the drop off day. Click HERE for Water Sample Instructions.

**Northern Giant Hornets -**Northern giant hornets (Vespa mandarinia) are also known as Japanese giant hornets and have been referred to as 'murder hornets' in the media. Information about the northern giant hornet, what they look like and what their status is in North America, in relation to Ontario. **Non-emergencies re: BEARS**Call the Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327 (\*between April 1-November 30) if a bear is: roaming around, checking garbage cans, breaking into a shed where garbage or food is stored, in a tree, pulling down a bird feeder or knocking over a barbecue, moving through a backyard or field but is not lingering.

**Emergencies re: BEARS**Call 911 or your local police, if you feel a bear poses an immediate threat to personal safety and: enters a school yard when school is in session, enters or tries to enter a residence, wanders into a public gathering, kills livestock/pets and lingers at the site, stalks people and lingers at the site. **Memorial Tree Program** - The Memorial tree program provides residents with the opportunity to honor loved ones, families or groups by having a tree with a memorial plaque installed on municipal property. The Memorial tree program and application can be found HERE or by calling the office at 613-584-3114.

**Recreation** - Laurentian Hills has a number of outdoor recreational opportunities. The municipality has three public beaches, ball and soccer fields, outdoor hockey and skating rinks, and a variety of all-season trails for outdoor enthusiasts. We are situated just minutes from Deep River and Petawawa, both with additional outdoor and indoor recreational opportunities for residents.
**Library** - The municipal libraries are resources for all residents and businesses in the region. The libraries offer loans, copying, printing, faxing, computers and the Internet, Service Ontario programs and more. Libraries are located in Point Alexander and Chalk River. **Animal Control** - In Laurentian Hills, we require that all dogs and cats be registered, by having a pet tag which is a free service. By tagging your pet, should they be found, they can be returned to the owner. To report a found animal with a tag or to report animals running at large, please contact the Municipal Office at 613-584-3114.

**FLOODS -**Residents are welcome to go to 33 Blimkie Street in Chalk River or 240 Bass Lake Road in Point Alexander to fill sandbags to be utilized for prevention and protection of your property. Use of these facilities is at your own risk.

**Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy** - The Town of Laurentian Hills is committed to the tenets of the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act ( the Act). The Town is committed to upholding the standards of privacy established within the Act and to providing individuals with the right of access to information in its custody and control including most general records as well as records containing their own personal information, where applicable. The Town will provide information when ever possible without anyone needing to use the formal Freedom of Information request process. In actual fact the Town does not maintain files on individuals as a general practice.
The Town does however caution that if letters or information is presented to Council or its Committees of the Whole that those meetings are open public meetings, once the Council has dealt with the presented information it becomes part of the public record and may be given to any requester provided it does not release personal information.
