# Using your garbage bin
Using your garbage (grey) bin and placing it at the curb.
Garbage is collected every other week. Check your collection calendar for your pickup day.
This information applies to you if your address receives bin-based collection.
If you do not have a garbage bin, visit Bag-based collection.
**Using and putting out your bin**
* To avoid odour and spills, consider putting garbage in plastic bags before putting it into the bin (optional).
* Leave at least 1 m (3 ft.) of space around your bin.
* Make sure the bin lid is closed.
* Face the bin handles towards your home and point the arrows towards the street.
* Do not place your bin in or on top of a snow bank
