## Municipal roles and responsibilities
We work with the Cities and Townships to deliver clean and safe drinking water and collect wastewater.
* In **North Dumfries and Wellesley Townships**, the Region of Waterloo supplies treated water, collects wastewater and bills properties. Villages that receive their water service directly from the Region of Waterloo include Ayr, Branchton, Heidelberg, Linwood, Lloyd Brown, Roseville, St. Clements, Wellesley.
* In **Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo and for the Townships of Wilmot and Woolwich**, the Region of Waterloo supplies treated water to the municipalities which, in turn, supply the water to properties in their municipality. The Cities and Townships then collect the wastewater from the properties and returns it to the Region of Waterloo for treatment.

## Your water bill and meter
Paying your water bill
Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, and Wilmot and Woolwich Townships residents and businesses receive water bills directly from the City or Township. Contact the City or Township with payment questions.
North Dumfries and Wellesley Townships residents and businesses with a municipal water and/or wastewater connection receive water bills from the Region of Waterloo. Contact the Region of Waterloo Finance Department with payment questions.
Use your water bill to track water use
Your water bill includes a line item for water consumption. Consumption is water use in cubic metres (m3). 1 cubic metre equals 1,000 litres of water.
Reviewing and tracking your water bills can help to:
· Create a baseline for your normal water use
· Detect unusual spikes in water use that need to be looked into
· Confirm effectiveness of water conservation changes you have made
**How to calculate your water use**
1. Find the consumption amount on your water bill.
2. Calculate household consumption per month: *Water bill consumption* *÷ 2 (if billed bi-monthly)*
3. Calculate per person consumption per month: *Household consumption ÷ number of residents in the home*
**Information to track**
When tracking meter readings, subtract the previous reading from the current one to calculate your consumption.

Our water conservation page includes tips and resources for detecting leaks in your home. Direct questions about your water bill to the municipality that bills you for your water service.
Use your water meter to help deteck leaks
* Locate your meter. Typically, in the basement, or where the water service enters your home.
* Record water meter reading
+ Digital meters - shine bright light on solar cell to display number
+ Analog (dial) meters - read dials or number wheels to find water use in cubic metres (since installed). Numbers to the right of the decimal (or in a contrasting colour) are in litres.
* Do not use water for a period of time such as overnight or when you leave your home for a length of time
* Record your water meter reading again and compare with the first reading. If the meter registers consumption, you may have a leak.
+ Digital meters - meter registers consumption when the number changes when not using water
+ Analog (dial) meters - meter registers consumption when the small red triangle or wheel spins indicating water is running. One full turn is one litre of water.
