## Zoning By-law Review
The Township of Russell is undertaking a comprehensive review of the Zoning By-law; the Zoning By-law regulates how land can be used and developed, including permitted uses, building heights, building setbacks, parking, and more.
The 2018 Zoning By-law is being updated to align with the Township's recently adopted Official Plan, reflect current regional and provincial policies, and respond to community growth. If approved, the proposed Zoning By-law will replace the current Zoning By-law and change some of the zoning rules within the entire geographic area of the Township of Russell.
The May 2026 Draft Zoning By-law has since been updated with revisions, including but not limited to:
* Revisions to the proposed Additional Dwelling Unit provisions;
* Updated permitted residential uses in the proposed Agricultural 2 Zone (A2);
* Revised terminology throughout the proposed By-law;
* Updated definition text;
* Revisions to zoning codes on the proposed Schedules.
**The July 2026 Draft Zoning By-law is now available for public view.**

## What is the Zoning By-Law?
The Zoning By-law sets the rules for how land and buildings can be used in the Township of Russell.
It tells you:
* What type of uses are allowed on a property (for example, residential, commercial or agricultural)
* Minimum lot size and frontage
* Required setbacks from property lines
* Maximum building height
* Parking requirements
* And other development rules
The Zoning By-law follows the direction set out in the Township's Official Plan.
In some cases, you may apply for a minor variance or a Zoning By-law amendment if your project does not meet the current rules.
